Believe in You

I stood at the top of the rickety ladder that had been nailed into the side of the tree. Ladder is a generous word. It was really more like three small ledges nailed into the side of the tree, allowing you to climb up to where a rope dangled. I had somehow convinced myself that today was the day I was going to jump off the edge of this lakeside cliff into the water, propelling myself from about 15 feet while swinging on this rope. I'd never done anything like this before, and I was terrified.
And… I had an audience. My three young daughters were watching me, and I wanted to show them that I could do it. And set the example of doing something a little scary, but overcoming the fear.
Climbing up those little ledges was easy. But as I put the rope between my legs and looked down, I started to shake uncontrollably. I don't know if it was a mix of vertigo or raw fear, but either way, it didn't matter how many deep breaths I took; it just wasn't going to happen. So, shamefully, I climbed down and watched as my husband went up after me, and effortlessly swung across and jumped right in, while we all cheered him on.
Then I asked myself, "Why am I stuck? Why am I not able to do this?" And that's when it struck me. It's because I didn't believe I could do it. It wasn’t fear. I didn’t think I was the type of person who did things like that. I didn’t believe in myself.
Belief is such a powerful force. It can propel us to new heights or hold us back from achieving our potential. My personal story of that day by the lake made me realize how belief, or the lack of it, can profoundly impact our actions and decisions.
For today's Kyetu Catalyst, let's dive into the world of belief. Have you ever experienced a moment where your belief, or lack thereof, influenced your choices or held you back from seizing an opportunity? Reflect on this in your journal for a few minutes. Write about the times when belief was your ally and the times when it became your stumbling block.
Self-belief is the cornerstone of our actions and achievements. It's the driving force that propels us to overcome challenges and pursue our dreams. When you believe in yourself, you're more likely to take risks, set ambitious goals, and persist in the face of adversity.
Research in the field of psychology supports the significance of self-belief. Studies have shown that individuals with higher self-belief tend to have greater life satisfaction and well-being. They're more resilient, more likely to achieve their goals, and less likely to be deterred by setbacks.
One key aspect of self-belief is the ability to cultivate a growth mindset. Psychologist Carol Dweck's research has emphasized the importance of believing that our abilities and intelligence can be developed with effort and learning. When we embrace a growth mindset, we're more inclined to take on challenges and view failures as opportunities for growth.
But self-belief isn't just about individual success. It also plays a pivotal role in our relationships. When you believe in yourself, you're more likely to build authentic connections and inspire trust in others. Self-belief is the foundation of confidence, and it can radiate positivity and motivation to those around you.
So what ended up happening that day by the lake, you ask? Oh, I did it! I jumped off that rope. But there was a very elaborate personal pep talk from my higher self, which got me there. It went something like this, “You can do this! And you will! You ARE the type of person that can do this. I believe in you! Do you want to do this? Do you want this? Yes, you do! You are strong, you are able, and you are willing. And you do these types of things. I know you can. You are in control. Breathe. Focus. Visualize the experience. Jump now. I believe in you.”
