Toxic Tales. What are toxic tales?

These are the things we tell ourselves in our mind, which are anything but true.

They're the opposite of an affirmation. We tell ourselves we aren't smart enough; or we aren't capable. We convince ourselves we shouldn't do certain things… or should do other things… when in fact, all we're doing is regurgitating the noise around us. It’s the compilation of the voices of others; of our culture, which has been so deeply ingrained and enmeshed within us, that we don't even know which thoughts belong to us anymore. Which thoughts are our own true and authentic ones.

A toxic tale is a negative story that you need to overcome.

A toxic tale is an anti-truth and a barrier.

Yet a toxic tale is also an opportunity. An opportunity for you to rewrite your own narrative into a belief that your authentic self can own. You see, every toxic tale is transformable.

So today, we invite you to grab your journal, and to transform your toxic tales into beautiful affirmations that will uplift you, help you grow, and become your best self.

Open your journal to a double-faced page. On the left-hand side of the page, write at the top Toxic Tales. And on the right-hand side of the page, write Positive Affirmation.

Ready to start? You're going to write as quickly as possible, without overthinking it, all the negative statements; all the toxic tales that you tell yourself. Do that for one minute. Literally just set a timer and write it as quickly as possible in that time frame. You'll probably end up writing five to 10 toxic tales.

And just like we do with all our affirmations at Kyetu, we always write them in the second person (meaning they start with “you”, as opposed to “I”). Why? So it's as if your higher power, or your best self is speaking to you. This has been proven to be more powerful and effective than first person statements (or ones that begin with “I”).

Once you've written out your Toxic Tales, on the right-hand side of the page, you're going to transform each one of them into a positive affirmation. For example, if your toxic tale says, “No one cares anyways”, you could transform that into, “You have family and friends that love, value, and care about you.”

If your toxic tale says, “Why do you even try? You're not smart enough.” On the right-hand side, you would transform that into, “You're smart and capable of doing anything you set your mind to.”

Once you've done this exercise, you will have five to 10 highly personalized, positive affirmations that you can absorbe into your life. Our Kyetu journals all have perforated pages, so if you want, you can rip out that newly minted positive affirmations page and keep it in your wallet, hang it on your mirror, or put it on your desk.

And every day, for the next 90 days, you're going to work on transforming your Toxic Tales. From untruths, to helping you become the next best version of your authentic self. How? Simply repeat your new, positive affirmations every, single day. Through repetition, you will say goodbye to your Toxic Tales and teach your mind to believe your new positive affirmations.
